Training course for budding film makers
August 26, 2011
Professional film makers at a club in Reading have devised a six-week course to get beginners started on making their own films.
Reading Film and Video Makers, a club for amateur film makers to meet, share knowledge and build friendships, based in
Caversham, wants to encourage new and younger members into the film making craft.
Professionals who belong to the club have written a six- week course (camera craft, audio, lighting, editing and titling)
for people who know little or nothing about making films; they don’t even need a camera.
The club’s new season starts on Tuesday, September 6, and the first six weeks will be split into one hour of beginners’
training with the second hour reverting to normal activities such as film nights, demonstrations, talks and competitions.
The six-week course costs £20 which is deductible from the year’s membership of £45 if the newcomers decide to join.
Club chairman Laurie Joyce, the author of much of the beginners’ programme, said: “It can be a bit daunting to go into
a new club when you are a beginner.
“So we thought that rather than just say we want new and younger members we needed to do something to attract them.
“It’s that time of year when people are thinking of evening courses and we think this is far better value than anything
currently on the market. It also means they are not committing to anything long term.
“We have deliberately kept the cost as low as possible so people can come along, learn about film making, and then
decide
if they want to stay with us. If they don’t wish to then at least we have helped them and it has cost them very little.”
The club, which has been operating in Reading for more than 50 years, meets every Tuesday from 8pm to 10pm at
St Andrew’s Church Hall in Albert Road, Caversham.
